Permits & APPLICATIONS
The Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) issues fire permits to ensure that all work involving fire safety systems and hazardous operations is conducted in accordance with local and national fire codes. Obtaining the proper permits is essential for protecting lives, property, and our communities.
You must obtain a fire permit for any work involving:
- Fire alarm system installation or modification
- Automatic sprinkler systems
- Standpipe and fire pump systems
- Commercial kitchen hood suppression systems
- Hazardous materials storage or use
- Open flames or special effects (events and film production)
- Fireworks, pyrotechnics, and flame performances
- Temporary structures (e.g., tents over 400 sq. ft.)
- Emergency generators
- Smoke control or evacuation systems

Fire permits are issued through the ePermits system in coordination with the Baltimore City Department of Housing & Community Development (DHCD).
Steps to apply:
Visit the ePermits Portal
Submit your application with required documents and drawings
Pay the applicable fees
Wait for plan review and approval (if required)
Receive your permit electronically
Note: Some permits require BCFD plan review prior to approval.
All permitted work must be inspected by the Baltimore City Fire Department.
Inspections must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance
All fire protection systems must be fully operational for final inspection
You must have approved plans and a valid permit on site during inspection
Failure to obtain the proper permit or schedule required inspections may result in project delays, penalties, or fines.
Hosting an event that involves open flames, cooking, generators, or temporary structures? You may need a Special Event Fire Permit. Please submit your application at least 21 days in advance to ensure timely review and approval.
